ITS ALL ABOUT THE TRANSFER PORTAL
WHAT IS THE NCAA TRANSFER PORTAL
The NCAA transfer portal is an online database that allows college athletes to officially declare their intention to transfer schools and to be recruited by other coaches and programs.
Think of the portal as more of an marketplace for recruitment.
When athletes enter the portal their name, sport, weight, height, and contact information all goes on the online database. Coaches are legally allowed to contact and reach out the athletes seconds after they enter the portal.
WHY WAS THE NCAA TRANSFER CREATED?
According to the NCAA Website, the transfer portal was created as a compliance tool to streamline and help regulate the transfer process from start to finish. Also to add more transparency to the process among the schools and it helps give student- athletes a clear way to say they are looking for a new program.
By centralizing all this information into one system, it allows and ensures all coaches, athletes and institutions are going through the same guidelines and reducing any potential rule violations and confusion that transferring to a new school may bring.
The decision to transfer by the athlete
STEP BY STEP OF THE PROCESS
Important: The Institution has two business days to enter an athlete into the portal
Notify your school: Coach or the Compliance office
Athlete name/information is officially in the portal
You are at the step where coaches are allowed to talk and see all of your information, basically the recruitment starts over for the athlete. A risk that an athlete may face during this part of the process can take your scholarship or reduce. You may lose access to all of your film.
This phase of the portal can either be very quickly and you get contacted right away or the process can be very slow and you have little to not interest.
Recruitment Starts
This phase of the portal athletes start comparing their scholarships offers, comparing coaching staff, visiting the school and seeing if they think it is a good fit for them.
Evaluate schools and the opportunities
This phase there is 3 outcomes that could possibly happen.
OPTION ONE- TRANSFER TO THE NEW SCHOOL
OPTION TWO- STAY AT CURRENT SCHOOL, but coaches can deny an athlete on coming back.
OPTION THREE- NO OFFERS, your future playing your sport is uncertain.
